Dr Ronald M. Steinbrenner says that many interpretations of the Bible are off. For example, one verse could state:
"I'm walking".
The translation could reflect "I'm walking to the mailbox", or "I'm walking - training for the Olympics" - but they are both regarded as ""walking", although the meanings are VASTLY different. "Pray intently" is one example: Although people ALWAYS interpret that as "really pray", the original word meant "infinitely" or "like a warrior". He said "praying for 1 hour is VASTLY different - that praying all day, through the night until you have a headache, praying the next day…" it's as vastly different as "walking to the mailbox" is from "training for 6 years for the olympics". With the Olympics, it's "obsessed", and PAINFUL. To the mailbox is "whistling", and you barely get a "stretch" from it.
There are MANY great speakers who also talk (and EXPLAIN - IN CONTEXT) about "chosen" and other things. Even "love" cannot be interpreted in 1 word, so they (incorrectly) use "love" in all situations. Loving someone with Christian love is - of course - VASTLY different than loving them with Erotic love.

See my views here. But to add, literalism in understanding Jesus and self-mutilation did occur. Probably the most famous early Christian self-mutilation, as a preventative of lust, was the self-castration of Origen of Alexandria (A.D. c 185-233). Origen did this in order to free himself of any possible scandalous rumors when he undertook privately to tutor young women regarding theology. He followed Jesus’ implication in Matthew 19:12. Later in life, though, he argued that his action had been extreme and should not be viewed as righteous for possible emulation by those who admired him. Later still, the Council of Nicaea (A.D. 325) is said to have made a strong stand against any Christian self-mutilation, particularly of the sex organs. (Though in my research for this article I have found references to the existence of that stand at Nicaea, I have not found the text of the Council’s statement itself).The other example was Abraham. Who circumcised Abraham?
In Genesis 17, God commands Abraham and his descendants to circumcise newborn boys - as a sign of His everlasting covenant with them. On a basic level, circumcision was about cutting away excess flesh as a physical marker of that covenant. And it was meant for [see above] ABRAHAM, NOT EVERY MAN!
Abraham was 99 when he was circumcised (JPS Tanakh 1917). Most suggest 2 possibilities: who circumcised him is not said, very probably Eliezerhi's head servant: the Jews say, that he sent for Shem, the son of Noah, who circumcised him and his son Ishmael; but it is most likely that Ishmael was circumcised by Abraham himself.

Speaking of "flesh" (or "the flesh"), this verse is a bookmark for all:
Romans 8:13

This literally translates to: " [conjunction] to live down/against/according to flesh to be about to die [conjunction] wind/breath to put to death deed/work a body to live"
Note: Sarca" does mean "flesh" - literally: the innards of the body. The Bible uses it as "the OUTWARD SKIN - what men lust after." There is a huge difference. Do men lust afte rher innads? stomach lining, intestines, brain?
First, this was ORIGINALLY a sign of complete dedication. The NEW COVENANT (even though "Jesus Christ - the same yesterday, today and forever"??) has SALVATION as the "shedding of the old" and "complete dedication" - with baptism.
With Hacidic Jews, if you ENJOY sex with your wife, that is PORN, and masturbation! You are not to enjoy it! Also, their custom is to make a hole in the bed sheet, and you only have sex to make children.
God wanted His chosen people circumcised, not the entire human species/race. They were to stand out separate from the world. If God wanted men to be circumcised. Why didn't God create men to be _born_ circumcised?
The answer: God wanted only Abraham and his family - to Circumcise. At 99 years old, he was circumcised! Ouch! What about his teenage son? You think _your_ teenagers have a hard time listening to you? Think about poor Ishmael being told he had to get circumcised when he was only just becoming a man - not exactly the Bar Mitzvah he was expecting! It was certainly painful, but Abraham and his entire household obeyed.
God did not “ask” Abraham, he _commanded_ Abraham - as a sacred covenant between Him and His people. Just as circumcision was an outward sign of inward faith, so is its modern day equivalent: baptism. There is no reason why a Christian should not be baptized.
Why male circumcision mattered to women in the Bible
Circumcision enlisted the circumcised in Yahweh’s opposition to flesh. By cutting away the flesh of the foreskin, Israel was incorporated into Yahweh’s war against flesh.
For the Israelites, it fulfilled their part of the Abrahamic Covenant, but not just those born into Jewish families needed to be circumcised. It was for every male who lived in a Jewish household: natives, servants, and aliens. And anyone who was not circumcised broke the covenant with God.
Other cultures who practiced circumcision did so as a rite of passage. The Egyptians, Edomites, Ammonites, and Moabites practiced a form of circumcision on young men at puberty or before marriage. Those who did not practice circumcision were the Philistines, Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks, and Romans. A lack of circumcision signaled wickedness and godlessness.
Paul settled this division among believers by pointing people to the grace of Jesus. He called them to remember the burial and resurrection of Jesus by reminding them of the forgiveness of sins and the removal of the dividing wall of hostility between them and the Lord (Ephesians 2:14). He concluded the debate in 1 Corinthians 7:19 where he wrote, “Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts.” Repentance and faith are what mattered most in the early Church’s debate over whether Gentile Christians needed to be circumcised.
Next, let me look that up - in the original Greek ...
Romans 2:28-29 (KJV) For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh
Original Greek: Ἰουδαῖος ὁ ἐν οὐδὲ οὐδὲ οὐδὲ σαρκὶ
Pronounced: “ioudaios o en older peritomé phanero saki"
LITERALLY means: Jewish/Judea the in/on/at and not/neither circumcision visible flesh
So one could easily translate that to “circumcise visible flesh … the _whole thing_.
This is the original Greek, don’t argue with me :-)
Next, John 7:22 states "anthropos” - meaning “human”, not “man”. Yes, there are huge areas of the earth, where they perform FEMALE circumcision!!

Ritual circumcision was already practiced by some heathen people before the time of Abraham. Even though the original significance is no longer remembered, the rite was known to be used by some cultures as a sanitary operation, a tribal mark, or a sacrificial portion of flesh to gods after human sacrifices began to decline. Another reason for circumcision was during a rite celebrating the coming of age of a person, and that ancient custom is still being performed, today, in many cultures around the world.
Male circumcision is the removal of the foreskin of the genital organ used in sexual reproduction. The sign or special meaning for this surgical operation in the Old Testament is mentioned in Genesis, chapter 17
“At first, this requirement of circumcision seems very strange. To some extent, no doubt, sanitary and health reasons were involved.
Although uncomfortable, this original biblical circumcision, as demanded by God, was really a minor procedure where only the very tip of the foreskin was removed. This was that small portion which extended past the bulbous structure (the glans) at the end of the flaccid human penis. The penis bled and needed time to heal, but would still contain a considerable portion of the foreskin, so that the glans was still protected. In its flaccid condition, the penis would appear as uncircumcised.
This would be the type of circumcision that Jesus received eight days after his birth. For thousands of years the procedure never changed, from Abraham until around the year 140 A.D., when a second and more radical step to the ritual was introduced. It was dictated by man — not God. The Jewish religious governing body “sought to put an end to the practice of youths desiring to appear uncircumcised by stretching the remaining foreskin for social [and] economic benefits and for sports competitions.” This stretching would obliterate the Jewish cut, so as to disguise ‘the seal of the covenant’.
In the apocryphal book of 1 Maccabees, there mentions a passage concerning this stretching problem.7 In order for the Jews to get along with Gentiles, “they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem, according to Gentile custom, and removed the marks of circumcision, and abandoned the holy covenant. They joined with the Gentiles and sold themselves to do evil,” (1 Maccabees 1:14-15). The word ‘gymnasium’ comes from the ancient Greek term gymnós meaning ‘naked’.8 This was the way men trained for sport.
To remove the circumcision bloodlessly, they used a restoration device called the pondus Judaeus (Jewish weight). This “was a special weight made of bronze, copper, or leather, which was fixed to [the] . . . skin and pulled it downward.” When it was applied for a long period of time, the foreskin was lengthened, which covered the exposed glans as desired.9
The change in procedure around 140 A.D., to stop the extension process, was to completely excise the remaining foreskin completely exposing the glans. Needless to say, a godly requirement then became a very painful and complicated man-made procedure.
Also, “when Greek paganism threatened to swamp Judaism some two centuries before Christ was born, circumcision became a symbolic and distinctive indication of Jewish fidelity to the covenant” and there was a resurgence in the practice. Although most Jews during the time of Christ followed the practice, soon after the Christian Church began to form, this practice began to wane, as it was felt no longer necessary (1 Corinthians 7:17-20).
The fact is, today in this Christian age, the circumcision is no longer biblically required. The Bible tells us in the New Testament, “This is my rule in all the churches. Was anyone at the time of his call already circumcised? Let him not seek to remove the marks of circumcision. Was anyone at the time of his call uncircumcised? Let him not seek circumcision. Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing; but obeying the commandments of God is everything. Let each of you remain in the condition in which you were called,” (1 Corinthians 7:17-20).
Now days, except for Jews, this procedure is usually performed by physicians in hospitals and clinics.13 Concerning the pain of this newer extended surgery, some Jewish scholars believe that the child should not be sedated, although pain-relieving ointment may be used, if necessary. Some say that the act should be painful, as a reminder that it was only necessary because of man’s failures.14 That may help the parents to justify the reason for a screaming child, but the infant sure can’t rationalize why he is in pain.
MY take? Why would God make our “wonderfully made” body - and then wan us to remove a part - it’s like an earring or tattoo. I am against it.

Female circumcision is practiced in 26 African countries, and it is estimated that at least 100 million women are circumcised. The mildest form is clitoridectomy and the more severe type is infibulation. Girls are commonly circumcised between the ages of 4 and 10 years. Since the operator is usually a nonprofessional without surgical experience, complications are common: hemorrhage and severe pain that can even result in shock and death. The most common long-term complication is the formation of dermoid cysts in the line of the scar.
• The infant’s primary relationship is with the mother. Circumcision trauma disrupts this relationship and leads to infant behaviors such as extended, inconsolable crying or emotional withdrawal. Mother’s interactions with her infant may be stressful and less rewarding. There are other potential adverse maternal emotional responses.
• The maternal instincts and experiences of women uniquely qualify them for the important responsibility of caring for infants and protecting them from pain and harm.
• Research demonstrates that women are generally more sensitive than men to the needs and feelings of infants, and newborn infants recognize, prefer, and are more responsive to their mothers.
• Generally, because they are not themselves circumcised, females are not subject to the personal psychological motivations of circumcised men to perpetuate the practice (e.g., “I want him to look like me”).
• According to a medical journal study, circumcision can adversely affect female sexual enjoyment.
• Any adverse psychological consequences of circumcision on males may adversely affect male-female relationships.
• Because of the prevalence of circumcision in the United States, some potential adverse psychological effects of circumcision on males (known/unknown) may have indirect adverse social effects on women.
• Mothers sign the majority of hospital circumcision consent forms.
Female Circumcision in Islam
Although circumcision of males is an act regarded as commendable in Islam, the scholars have differed in regards to females. Some scholars have regarded the act as commendable, while others regard it as merely permissible. Lately, some have even stated its impermissibility. All these opinions are based upon a number of Prophetic narrations (hadeeths) relating to this subject.
The scholars of Islam who state that circumcision is a commendable act mainly do so due to a hadeeth in which the Prophet, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, said:
“Circumcision is Sunnah for men and an honorable thing for women.” (Musnad Ahmad)
“Trim, but do not cut into it, for this is brighter for the face (of the girl) and more favorable with the husband.”
- Mu`jam al-Tabarânî al-Awsat
“Sunnah” Circumcision
What one can see is that Type I FGC, sometimes called “Sunnah” circumcision, does have some basis in the religion of Islam, however weak this basis may be. It is key to note, however, that it is only this first type which some of the scholars regarded as permissible or commendable, which is the clipping of the prepuce until the glans becomes visible, or less. This procedure is harmless and has no detrimental effects upon women, and is similar to the circumcision of men, as mentioned previously. Rather, some have even argued that there are some benefits to this procedure, as mentioned earlier, such as increase of sexual pleasure, prevention of unpleasant odors which result from foul secretions beneath the prepuce, and reduction of the incidence of urinary tract infections and infections affecting the reproductive system.[2]
As for the other types of FGC, there is no basis for this practice in Islam, rather it is strictly prohibited, as in the hadeeth which implies its permissibility is a prohibition from going to extremes. Also, Islamic law protects women’s right to sexual enjoyment, demonstrated by the fact that a woman has the right to divorce on the grounds that her husband does not provide sexual satisfaction. As for those Muslims in certain parts of the world which do practice this form of female genital mutilation, as they grow in their understanding of Islam, they will start to put aside these abominable actions. A clear example of this is that that one of the various groups in Kenya who do not practice FGM are the Muslims, although it is a country whose people are known to practice it.

The anti-argument side:

2. What is your motive?
The Bible makes it clear that God is very concerned about our motives. For example, giving money to your church might be a wonderful act of worship or an empty gesture, depending upon the attitude of your heart. The same can be true of masturbation.
Sexuality was created to draw us into relationships. The hormones that flow through a teenager's body awaken the desire to seek intimacy. The goal of masturbation is to bring pleasure to yourself, typically outside of relationship. For this reason, some believe that masturbation is selfish and misusing the gift of sex. While that may be the case, I don't think it is always so cut and dry.
Many women learned (or were even taught) to masturbate at very young ages. This is particularly true of those who have been sexually violated and have been "sexualized" at a young age. While I wouldn't recommend masturbation, I also don't think it should add to the shame that women feel about their sexuality. Just like men have "wet dreams," many women masturbate and orgasm in their sleep. Single women are sexual. Even those who are committed to purity in mind and body have sexual hormones, dreams, and thoughts that impact their body.
There are Christian leaders working with singles who believe that masturbation may be a way to stay sexually pure until marriage. While I would be very cautious to give that advice, I recognize that for some, masturbation is a way of channeling sexual urges away from the temptations to have sex. It's possible for the motive of masturbation to be for purity and a form of exercising self-control.
The question of motive is also important for a married woman. There is a huge difference between a selfish wife who masturbates because she is angry with her husband and a wife who masturbates for the purpose of building intimacy with her husband. Consider, for example, a wife who is separated from her husband because of travel, deployment, or illness. She wants to focus on her husband and channel her sexual urges toward him.
Masturbation can also be beneficial in cases of sexual dysfunction. A very common form of sex therapy called "sensate focus" helps a woman pay attention to how she responds to sexual touch, first by touching herself and then by guiding her husband's hand as he touches her. This can be an important step in healing, particularly for women who have experienced sexual trauma that triggers anxiety at sexual touch.

The apostle Paul taught that "nothing should master" us. In other words, we shouldn't be controlled or addicted to anything. This applies to food, shopping, Facebook, and also to masturbation. For many women, masturbation can become a way of escape from boredom, loneliness, depression, pain, and stress. We learn at a young age to soothe ourselves with something that feels good.

4. Am I honoring God with my body?
"Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body" (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).
This verse can bring conviction regarding a lot of choices we make with our body, but it was written in the context of sexuality. If there is a "gold standard" question to ask, this is it. In some situations, the answer to whether you're glorifying God in your body may be yes, and in other situations the answer is clearly no.
I have great respect for women (married and single) who want to honor God with their sexuality. I believe masturbation is an issue that each woman has to ask God about. When God wanted to be clear about something, He inspired clear teaching in Scripture. The Bible is silent on masturbation. What God did state definitely is that he wants to give us his wisdom. "If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking" (James 1:5).
God is the High Priest who understands our questions and struggles. Even in this most intimate (and perhaps embarrassing) issue, don't be afraid to pour out your heart to him and ask for his specific direction and wisdom.
MY bottom-line: If God made us with desires, and they are with us from puberty, then WHY is it "dirty" (would God make us "dity"??) - why feel so guilty - when we do what God made us to do?
